New technology - the future of RFID Wristbands.

Precision Dynamics Corporation (PDC) is reportedly the largest supplier of wristbands in the world. Back in 2000 they began work to produce an RFID wristband.

PDC; taken their eye off the ball?

Eye off the ball?

Since that time they have poured a lot of money time & effort into realising the dream & as they have progressed they have sought to protect their investments by compiling a list of patents that would be difficult to jump over.

Intellectual property both in production methods & design is hoped to keep other wristband manufacturers at bay. Will it?

Success was slow at the beginning & now they have turned the corner, partnering up to provide RFID solutions at waterparks ranging from Hyland Hills to the Great Wolf group.

The question is; have they circled the wagons a little early & taken their eye off the ball. Challengers are coming thick & fast, with RFID wristbands being produced worldwide & PDC working out which battles to fight in order for them to protect territory they consider to be rightfully theirs.

Locking up the market?

Locking up the market?

Are the RFID chip manufacturers going to let PDC get away with locking up a market segment & restricting what would be considered lucrative territory. Somehow, I don't think so & PDC may be challenged by much bigger fish. How long before a better & cheaper RFID solution is available in a wristband & this RFID solution is not covered by PDC IP. My mail is a few months...

Over the last few years major print solutions have come out of RFID N Print in Australia & been applied to wristbands - specifically Barcodes & variable information coupled with photo quality graphics - which has been well received in a market which doesn't require or want the expense of RFID infrastructure.

PDC were the first to develop a bar code wristband system in 1984, & they don't dominate the entertainment market in this area. Could lightning strike twice? Interesting times are ahead...

Tip of the Day

If you require a longer length wristband, in most cases it is possible to create a longer wristband by joining two wristbands together.

If your plastic wristband has a clip, just thread the male section through the required hole of the second wristband & close the fastener. Then apply the wristband to suit & then close the other fastener.

A similar approach may be used with tyvek wristbands. Remove the peel off cover from the 1st wristband, this reveals the adhesive area & then that wristband is placed on the second wristband at the required length.

These are simple solutions when dealing with people with large wrists or when using wristbands for other purposes such as identifying young animals where a band may be placed around the animals neck.
